What Walking Dead characters will appear in the spinoff series?

The Walking Dead universe has been greatly expanded by spinoff series continuing the stories that began in The Walking Dead. Some spinoffs take place in the same world but introduce new characters, one spinoff was an episodic anthology with standalone stories, and several others are direct spinoffs featuring familiar characters from the main series. Which characters will appear in the spinoffs?

Negan – Jeffrey Dean Morgan 

Negan’s story continues in The Walking Dead: Dead City spinoff. Set several years after events of the final episode of The Walking Dead, Dead City finds Negan, a father to a son Joshua with his wife Annie (Medina Senghore), who have been transported to Missouri as he is also a wanted man for killing five men in New Babylon. He also has taken charge of a young girl, Ginny (Mahina Napoleon), who lost her parents. Then Maggie finds him and requires his assistance in rescuing her son Hershel who has been abducted by a former Savior, The Croat  (Željko Ivanek), who reigns terror over Manhattan. Negan’s story will continue in season 2 of Dead City, where he has been handed over to The Dama (Lisa Emery), the leader of the group who runs Manhattan.

Maggie – Lauren Cohan

Maggie also stars in Dead City with her primary goal of rescuing her son Hershel from The Croat. She has had to uproot her life from the Hilltop, which was too damaged to be repaired and relocates at The Bricks, located near New Jersey or New York. The Croat takes her son and will exchange him for Negan. The first season ends with Maggie vowing to end things with Negan so she can focus more on her son instead of revenge against Negan.

Hershel – Logan Kim 

Due to the time jump in Dead City, Hershel was recast (formerly played by Kien Michael Spiller). The character doesn’t get much screen time in season 1 but is a significant focus. He is reunited with his mother, but the reunion isn’t what she hoped for. Hershel is very angry with his mother for being so focused on exacting revenge on Negan that she ignores her son. This will likely be a key storyline in season 2.

The first season of Dead City concluded in July 2023.

The Walking Dead spinoff characters

Daryl Dixon – Norman Reedus 

Daryl’s story will expand in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon as he travels to France. He doesn’t arrive there by choice and will encounter a group of nuns who believe he is a messenger sent to them to accomplish a goal. He will assist a young boy, Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), to a destination where they believe he will lead the revival of humanity. He will also be hunted by a group known as The Cause, a political movement led by  Genet (Anne Charrier) and her second-in-command, Codron (Romain Levi).

Daryl Dixon premieres on AMC on September 10, 2023, at 9 p.m. ET and has been renewed for a second season.

Carol Peletier – Melissa McBride 

Carol will appear in season 2 of Daryl Dixon. No information has been revealed about her role in this series.

Rick Grimes – Andrew Lincoln 

Rick will return in The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live in 2024. Rick has been kept by the CRM (Civic Republic Military), the military and police force of the Civic Republic. He was traded to the organization by Jadis, an act that allowed her to join and climb the ranks within. Rick escaped but was recaptured in The Walking Dead’s final episode’s post-credits scene. He has never given up hope of being reunited with his family. The Ones Who Live will shed more light on Rick’s adventures after the bridge explosion and reunite him with his love.

Michonne – Danai Gurira

Michonne will also return in The Ones Who Live and has never stopped looking for Rick. This series will reveal more about what has transpired with her since she left The Walking Dead in search of Rick. They will be reunited and come against the CRM.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will premiere in 2024 and AMC and AMC+.

Jadis – Pollyanna McIntosh

Although not confirmed by AMC, McIntosh was seen on the set of The Ones Who Live. As Jadis is vital to Rick’s story and serves as a Warrant Officer, she is one character who should be included in this series.

Alpha – Samantha Morton 

Morton reprised her role as Alpha for the anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead. Episode three, titled “Dee,” took place before she became Alpha and leader of the Whispers. This story is an essential chapter in her life and changes what viewers thought they knew about the formation of the Whisperers.

According to reports, TWDU will continue to expand with the addition of more spinoffs.
