Fear the Walking Dead’s Colman Domingo to recieve award at TIFF
By Renee Hansen
Colman Domingo is a talented actor whose versatility makes him one of the best. He will return to AMC in the final six episodes of Fear the Walking Dead as Victor Strand in October; he recently appeared as a guest judge on Project Runway and appears on the cover of this month’s Ebony magazine. These are only a few of the events occupying his time, and now he will receive a special honor at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).
Domingo will receive this year’s Tribute Performer Award, which “recognizes an overall body of exceptional work.” One of seven recipients this year, Colman is honored for his impressive career and his performance in the new film Sing Sing. Domingo will join the ranks of other talent who have been given the award.
2022: Brendan Fraser and the My Policeman cast
2021: Jessica Chastain and Benedict Cumberbatch
2020: Kate Winslet and Anthony Hopkins
Directed by Greg Kwedar, Sing Sing tells of a group of incarcerated actors who are a part of the facility’s art rehabilitation program. They stage a play based on the program founded at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, the troupe’s first foray into comedy. The film will premiere at this year’s TIFF and has been called one of Domingo’s most memorable performances of his career, which is saying a lot.
Joining Domingo in this film are a group of formerly incarcerated actors and alumni of Sing Sing’s art rehab program, adding to the authenticity of this film.
Colman Domingo in Rustin
Next, Domingo will be seen in George C. Wolfe’s Bayard Rustin biopic, Rustin, which will premeire at Telluride before being shown at TIFF. His performance as Civil Rights activist Bayard Rustin has created quite the buzz for the 2024 Best Actor Oscar.
This film is noteworthy for the subject matter and because 2023 marks the 60th anniversary of the 1963 March on Washington, which Rustin organized. This was the event where Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I Have A Dream” speech.
Bayard Rustin isn’t well known for his efforts, but this film will change that.
Domingo’s portrayal will, no doubt, be a memorable one, as his presence, whether in film, TV, or the stage, always draws the attention of the viewer. He captivates with his storytelling and is a true visionary who will bring Rustin’s legacy to the foreground, teaching new generations of his accomplishments.
Rustin paved the way for the future of the civic rights movement, leading marches and freedom rides. He later became a fierce advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, focusing his efforts to draw attention to the 1980s AIDS crisis, a movement he would fight for until his death in 1987.
Rustin debuts on November 3, 2023, in theaters and on November 17 on Netflix.
