Walking Dead’s Chandler Riggs attends Tucson Comic Con, talks strikes
By Renee Hansen
Actor Chandler Riggs portrayed Carl Grimes, one of the iconic characters from The Walking Dead universe. This character was also featured in the comic story created by Robert Kirkman and is a role Riggs is well known for. Cast at the age of ten, Riggs would play the part, for which he won three Saturn Awards and a Young Artist Award, until he was 18 years old.
Riggs recently attended the Tucson Comic Con over Labor Day weekend and talked to 13 News about the SAG/AFTRA strikes.
The Tucson Comic Con was held at The Tucson Convention Center September 1-3, 2023, and featured many great guests. Riggs and Noel Guglielmi (Felipe in season 1) were two actors in attendance who starred in The Walking Dead series.
Riggs would comment on the strikes and AI, of which the advancement threatens creativity and originality. “It’s always important to have your own stamp on your craft. How you approach one role should be how you alone approach your role,” said Riggs.
Fair pay is another priority in the strike negotiations. He uses streaming as an example, stating that with the changes in movies and shows being viewed on streaming services, this should be reflected in actors’ pay as they don’t receive residuals from streaming.
"That is one of the kickers with streaming, is that it extends longevity, but if someone binges all of ‘The Walking Dead’ 20 times, the actors don’t see anything from that, but if AMC were to air the show 20 times, then we would get residuals from it. – Chandler Riggs"
