After 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple flopped at the box office, there was concern that this could be the end of the best current zombie franchise in film, the 28 Days Later franchise. Fortunately, that's not going to be the case.
In an interview with JoBlo, Danny Boyle, who led the first three movie, 28 Days Later, 28 Weeks Later, and 28 Years Later, revealed that the third 28 Years Later movie will be starting production in 2027.
"We ran out of time. Because it’s set in an area of Britain [where] you can only film at certain times of the year. We ran out of time this year—we literally ran out of time… So it’ll be, hopefully, fingers crossed, next year. But there’s the enthusiasm there, and Alex (Garland) has done a wonderful script for it.”
28 Years Later: The Bone Temple continues Spike's story after he falls in with a ragtag group on the mainland. We also continue the story of Dr. Ian Kelson as he tries to find a solution to the virus that wiped out the UK.
Obviously, this is incredible news for fans of the franchise. Despite Bone Temple's lackluster box office performance, the movie was still incredible. Director Nia DaCosta did a wonderful job with another great story. As long as the quality is still there, I don't think they should slow down anytime soon, honestly.
At this point, it's not really clear what's next in the story, but we probably won't be waiting too long to find out. If production gets started on the film next year, we could realistically see the movie released sometime in 2028, although it could be even later.
A long gap between the movies would be a bit unfortunate, especially after what happened with the first two 28 Years Later movies. Remember, they were only released about seven months apart. 28 Years Later premiered last summer, while The Bone Temple was released in January 2026.
DaCosta shared her thoughts that that short gap between releases might have caused some confusion among fans of the franchise who didn't understand that The Bone Temple was a sequel to 28 Years Later.
I think that's definitely part of it. The good news is that the franchise will definitely continue, and we'll get to see the rest of Spike's story play out. And, if you missed The Bone Temple or 28 Years Later, you can watch both movies on Netflix right now while we wait for the next film.
Despite Daryl Dixon coming to an end later this year, the future of zombie shows and movies looks quite bright with Dead City season 3 returning this summer, The Last of Us season 3 coming soon, and the 28 Days Later franchise still going strong.
On top of all that, there's hope that the next continuation of The Walking Dead will be massive, as well. Stay tuned for more news on that front!
