Having lived in the world of The Walking Dead as long as I have, I've seen spinoffs come and go, but one that's only gotten better with age is The Walking Dead: Dead City. While there are moments in the show I don’t really agree with, there’s no denying the story has gotten tighter and more interesting over time.
But as of now, it still hasn’t been renewed for season 4, which, to me, is absolutely crazy. So here are four reasons we really need The Walking Dead: Dead City renewed for season 4.
We have to see Maggie find happiness again
This is the biggest thing for me personally. I really want to see Maggie (Lauren Cohan) find happiness again.
Before people throw tomatoes my way and say a man doesn’t need to be in a woman’s life for her to find happiness, I’m well aware. And Maggie has had plenty to fight for over her time on this show.
Whether it’s to protect her people, keep her son safe, or become a full-on leader, she has thrived. Heck, she has done more than that, if we’re being honest. She’s a badass and deserves all the praise.
That said, I know Maggie feels a certain amount of loneliness. She even said to Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) at some point in season 3 that he’s the closest thing she has to family outside of her son—which we will unpack later. But that statement stands out. Maggie really doesn’t have anyone else in her life she truly feels she can open up to and be herself with. Glenn (Steven Yeun) was her person, and now he’s gone.
In the season 3 finale, we see Maggie take off her wedding ring, symbolizing that she’s finally moving on from Glenn and finding her place in the world. With that being said, I think it’s time for her to finally find someone new and find that happiness one more time. Maybe she’ll find it with Luis (Raul Castillo), who knows?
There has to be a better reason for Hershel’s existence
Look, Hershel (Logan Kim) is great and all, but I really need him to exist for something beyond just being Maggie’s son. We got a little more of his purpose in season 3, when he started learning how to become a medic, which is really cool, but otherwise he’s still just… drawing things.
In the season 3 finale, we see him learning to tattoo and paint a full-on mural of Renata (Aimee Garcia) in the hospital, so he’s clearly talented at art. But at the same time, that doesn’t really help in a world that's trying to kill you. And right now, he’s sort of still purposeless.
I think that if we’re given a season 4, we can really see Hershel grows into someone better, a leader, maybe with other teenagers or medics. Maybe we can see him interact with some of the other kids we once knew. Who knows? But right now, he’s kind of the least interesting character, which really should not be the case.
We need to know what Maggie wants Negan to do
At the end of season 3, we know that Maggie asked Negan to do something after naming him her Head of Security for the zone. It’s implied that she meant something to do with the whole “take back New York City” goal that they established in the city. But it can’t be just that, right?
Negan is the kind of maniac when it comes to taking back places and killing people. While he certainly has a conscience, he also swore to Maggie that he'd help her in any way she needs, even if it’s messy. I have a feeling Maggie needs Negan for something we’re not really predicting. Maybe someone she needs him to deal with is already captured, or there's a threat on the horizon.
Either way, I need to know.
There has to be some connection to the mainline series
This is the biggest reason that season 4 has to happen. I mean, seriously. Why are we not talking about anyone back home? This ties to what Maggie said: she doesn’t have much close family. What happened to Rick (Andrew Lincoln), Michonne (Danai Gurira), and everyone else? We know those areas are connected. Did they all… fall apart?
We know that Daryl (Norman Reedus) and Carol (Melissa McBride) are over in Europe, but that takes place years before Dead City, which means that they’re most likely back somehow. Will they run into Maggie? Is anyone going to show up? We’ve been teased that a reunion is happening in 2027, but with The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon not coming back until next year, I’m not sure if that’s happening.
Either way, I’d love to see what happens, and if we could somehow find that connection in season 4—if it gets renewed.
