Back in 2016, everyone and their mother was trying to figure out who Negan killed inThe Walking Dead season 6 finale. As it turns out, even the actor, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was doing the same thing.
During a July 2026 interview on the Out of Order podcast, later shared on TikTok, Morgan revealed that another country had begun spoiling the show through the dubbing process, so to keep it a secret (even from Morgan himself), they shot alternate endings.
Morgan revealed they even filmed one ending where he “killed everybody,” meaning the whole crew that was in that scene:
“We shot an ending. I killed everybody in this lineup. I take a bat to every person's head.”
After that, they sent that version to the dubbing teams, which the interviewer compared to “spycraft,” to throw dubbers off. Morgan, in the end, still didn’t know who he killed. He only found out when season 7 finally began filming:
“I knew in the comic book it was Glenn. I had no idea. So all you see is the bat coming down, and it cuts to black.”

Honestly, I remember when this happened. I was one of those fans who would analyze every single frame of that scene in slow motion to see if I could pick out a single detail or clue as to who Negan killed. When that Negan cliffhanger was revealed, Negan would kill Abraham as his first victim, and then Glenn as his next, fans were understandably upset.
Even after eleven seasons, Glenn’s demise still hits incredibly hard and is one of the most gut-wrenching The Walking Dead deaths out there. It was certainly a WTF plot twist.
To hear Morgan talk about how he didn’t even know who he killed makes sense — the fewer people who knew, the better. Nowadays, Morgan is still playing Negan in The Walking Dead: Dead City alongside Lauren Cohan, where now, in season 3, they’re working more as allies and friends rather than enemies. Bet you never saw that coming as a former The Walking Dead fan.
It does make you wonder how much the stars of Dead City know ahead of time. There have been plenty of rumors going around about what might happen in season 3 and a potential season 4 — especially that Maggie and Negan debate about the possibility of a romance between them. To me, it is an absolute no-no.
Either way, it’s interesting to go back to that time and hear just how serious they were about keeping these deaths a secret — even though it was most likely the biggest mistake killing off some of those characters. The Walking Dead was never quite the same after Negan's big introduction and Glenn's death.
