Walking Dead director and SFX master Greg Nicotero recommends new horror movies
By Renee Hansen
Director, producer, SFX creator, and restaurant chain owner Greg Nicotero has been part of The Walking Dead universe since before the main series was officially green-lit. He has also portrayed walkers in numerous episodes, with Lauren Cohan's Maggie holding the title for killing him the most times. Recently, Nicotero recommended some newer horror films, and since he knows horror, we thought we'd share those movies.
Talk to Me (2023)
First is the 2023 supernatural horror Talk to Me, directed by Danny and Michael Philippou, which marks their feature directorial debuts. The movie was written by Danny Philippou and Bill Hinzman from a concept created by Daley Pearson.
Talk to Me features a severed and embalmed hand that a group of teens discover will allow them to interact with spirits. The movie stars Sophie Wilde, Joe Bird, Alexandra Jensen, Otis Dhanji, Miranda Otto, and more. The film was a box-office success that became A24's highest-grossing horror film and second-highest-grossing film overall. A sequel is currently in development.
Talk to Me is currently available on VOD on Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV.
When Evil Lurks (2023)
When Evil Lurks was Nicotero's next suggested movie, written and directed by Demián Rugna. This supernatural horror is set in a small rural town where a demon is about to be born. Residents are desperate to escape before this happens, but will it be too late?
The movie stars Ezequiel Rodriguez, Demián Salomon, Luis Ziembrowski, Silvia Sabater, and Marcelo Michinaux and has received critical acclaim. Via Rotten Tomatoes, "A hard-hitting horror film whose surface-level frights are just as engaging as its thematic concerns. When Evil Lurks marks a viscerally unsettling addition to the possession horror canon."
When Evil Lurks streams on AMC's Shudder.
Late Night with the Devil (2024)
Set in the 1970's Late Night with the Devil is a found footage film, written, directed and edited by Cameron and Colin Cairnes. David Dastmalchian portays, Jack Delroy, a late night talk show host of Night Owls, who on Halloween 1977, invites evil to his show which subsequently enters the homes of every viewer that night. The film is presented as a documentary investigating what really went on that night.
The movie also stars Laura Gordon
, Ian Bliss
, Fayssal Bazzi
, Ingrid Torelli
, Rhys Auteri
, Georgina Haig
, and Josh Quong Tart. It has received critical acclaim for Dastmalchain's performance and for proving that possession themes can still be fresh.
