Who died in The Walking Dead season 2, episode 12 Better Angels?
By Renee Hansen
The penultimate episode of season 2 of The Walking Dead, "Better Angels," marks a key moment that changes things for Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln) and his group. There are two deaths in this episode, one that shakes Rick to his core and makes him realize a hard truth.
The episode was written by Evan T. Reilly & Glen Mazzara and, directed by Guy Ferland, and originally aired on AMC on March 11, 2012. The story begins honoring Dale Horvath (Jeffrey DeMunn), who was disemboweled by a walker and then mercifully shot by Daryl (Norman Reedus) at the end of the previous episode.
This episode finds the group still torn about the prisoner Randall (Michael Zegen), whom Shane (Jon Bernthal) finally takes matters into his own hands. He takes him to the woods, kills him, and sets up a story that Randall escaped and is armed in the woods. When Glenn (Steven Yeun) and Daryl come upon the reanimated Randall, Glenn kills him and, upon examination, finds no bites or scratches but that a broken neck is what killed him.
During this time, Rick and Shane are also searching for Randall, but Rick quickly picks apart Shane's story and realizes Shane lured him to the field to kill him. This results in Rick stabbing Shane, who dies, and this is witnessed by Carl (Chandler Riggs). It appears that Carl pulls a gun on his dad, but it is actually aiming at the walker version of Shane. As they examine his body, they don't see the horde heading toward them and the farm.
This will be addressed at the end of the next episode. Rick admits to the group that Dr. Jenner (Noah Emmerich) told him at the CDC, "We're all infected." He tells them everyone carries the virus and that he didn't know it was true until Shane reanimated without being bitten.
This episode only featured two deaths, Randall and Shane, but it was pivotal in learning that what Jenner said was true. Rick couldn't believe it until he saw it for himself.
