Steven Yeun already starred in one Netflix movie with Ben Affleck this year, but the duo has another coming very soon. Finally, Netflix shared the official trailer for Animals, a new thriller that premieres on Friday, Oct. 9.
Animals tells the story of a politician, Mark Kimball, played by Affleck, who is trying to find his son after he was kidnapped. The trailer seems to suggest that it happened because of his political dealings.
Yeun and Affleck star in the film along with Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson, Adriana Paz, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Ray Fisher, Matt Gerald, and Mark Kassen. In addition to playing the lead in the film, Affleck also co-wrote the screenplay with Connor O. McIntyre and Billy Ray. He also directed the movie.
Based on the trailer, it looks like Yeun has quite a big role to play in the film. We don't know much about his character yet, but he appears to be someone close to Kimball, perhaps as a close confidante. He's mostly lurking near Kimball at his home and political events. With such a small cast, Yeun is going to be right in the mix.
Affleck had high praise for his co-stars, including Yeun, in an interview with TUDUM.
"I’m a big believer that the audience has expectations of me, of Kerry, of Steven, of everyone,” Affleck said. “You want to use that and then drift away from it in ways that help tell your story.”
Yeun is very well known among Netflix circles for starring in Beef season 1 along with Ali Wong. He also starred in The Rip with Affleck and Matt Damon. He just booked another Netflix show, as well.
Yeun is far from the only Netflix star on this cast, though. Affleck has worked with Netflix now on a few occasions, including on The Rip. Anderson is, of course, well known for starring in Sex Education, which was quite a big show. Luis Gerardo Méndez starred in Netflix's Club de Cuervos and Narcos: Mexico.
Animals has all the makings of an incredible new Netflix thriller. We haven't seen a Netflix movie since The Rip with this many big stars. With the political elements and Affleck at the helm, Animals will most definitely be a bigger Netflix release. This could very well be the biggest Netflix movie of the year when it's all said and done.
I don't think it's going to get Oscar buzz or anything like that, but we have entered the stretch when Netflix starts rolling out its awards season contenders. Affleck is no stranger to Oscar-winning movies, so maybe there is some dark horse potential on the awards circuit for Animals, even if it's not quite an Oscar-level film.
