I can’t tell you how many good The Walking Dead characters have come and gone. There are even more characters we’ve completely forgotten about, honestly, because what’s the point of remembering someone who brought nothing to the table? But you want to know what I think? There are some things this show did dirty.
And I mean that in the best way. Were some of these characters that were wronged still enjoyable in certain ways? Yes. But there’s just one character that gets to me every time that I feel was wronged in the worst way—and that, my friends, is Andrea Harrison.
Andrea was an amazing sniper in the comics
In The Walking Dead comics, Andrea is a force to be reckoned with — and she’s a character who made it really far into the series. She was also eleven years younger and a law office clerk when the world fell apart. But over the course of the series, she really grows into herself.
Does she have a few things that happen that are kind of “eh?” Yeah. I mean, I’m still recovering from the fact that she had a romantic relationship with Dale in the comics when we kind of know them as a father-daughter relationship in the show. But there was so much more to love about her.
She was genuinely a strong person. She became one of the best fighters for Rick’s group. And what’s even better is that she and Rick actually became a legit couple, so much so that she became a surrogate mother to Carl at one point. He loved Andrea so much that when he had his own family, he named his daughter after her. I mean, come on. Now that’s just beautiful.
But in the show, we don’t see that version of her. And it bothers me. Intensely.
Show Andrew is a watered-down, messed-up version
I remember when The Walking Dead was really popular, and people were talking about the most heartbreaking deaths; there were also polls going around as to which character fans were happy to have gone. Andrea was at the top of most of those lists.
And yeah, if I didn’t know comic book Andrea, I would think the same thing.
What they did to Andrea in the show is make her complain about pretty much everything, shoot people upside the head (yes, I’m still bitter she almost killed Daryl years later), and, to top it all off, she slept with the enemy. I mean, girl. Come on. Don’t ever trust a man that kind in the apocalypse!
Alright, maybe that’s being a little harsh, but you have to give me some credit—they did not do this girl any favors. It was no wonder she was killed off, and essentially Michonne took her place beside Rick.
No shade to Danai Gurira. She is my queen, and I will forever love her as Michonne, but I can’t help but think of what a great storyline she could have had all these years later. And I also feel really bad for Laurie Holden, the woman who played Andrea, because she did a great job too — only for her character to get dragged through the mud. Ugh.
I don’t know, maybe Andrea will show up somehow in an alternate reality episode in some shape or form. But until then, I’ll remain bitter about what The Walking Dead did to my girl. Even so, I’ll probably still end up watching the show and all 11 of its seasons again on Netflix.
