Fans are eager to see what the second season of the Maggie and Negan spinoff, The Walking Dead: Dead City, will bring. The trailers and opening minutes reveal a lot of action, which will see Maggie and Negan, once again, on opposite sides. But the trailer also gives hints that the duo could team up before the season ends.
Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) are two characters that seemed impossible to pair up in a spinoff. Maggie's undying hatred toward the man who brutally beat her husband, Glenn (Steven Yeun), to death has never been a secret. Negan, former leader of the Saviors, did much to redeem himself from his past sins, but was it enough to allow Maggie some forgiveness?
By the end of The Walking Dead series, Maggie and Negan have a heart-to-heart conversation. Maggie admits that Negan has done his part in earning a place within the communities, but she also tells him she can never forgive him.
"Because I know now, I can't. Glenn was beautiful. I'll never love anyone like that again. I remember his smile, his goodness, and the way he made me feel. But when I look at you, all I see is that bat coming down on his head, blood running down his face, I hear him...I hear him calling for me. And I hear you mocking him while he's dying. So, I can't forgive you." - Maggie to Negan
This was a heartbreaking moment as she poured her heart out to Negan and to see the look of deep regret on his face.
When Dead City was announced, fans were uncertain how these two characters would partner up. Most guessed correctly that it was for the safety of her son, Hershel (Logan Kim). They traveled to the island of Manhattan, which was overrun by gangs, to find Hershel. Little did Negan know that Maggie would betray him to secure the rescue of her son.
The Walking Dead: Dead City season 2
Everything that AMC has released for the upcoming season of Dead City indicates that the pair will be on opposite sides of the battle for Manhattan.
Even the official synopsis states: In the growing war for control of Manhattan, Maggie and Negan find themselves trapped on opposite sides. As their paths intertwine, they come to see that the way out for both is more complicated and harrowing than they ever imagined.
But fans on Reddit and social media fear that a romance between Maggie and Negan is brewing and could play out this season. Not that this is a new concept, as many have believed this would happen since the series was announced but the official trailer gives glimpses of this possibility.
The trailer (above) shows that Maggie and Negan do face off head to head, but the results of that meeting is yet to be seen. Maggie has promised her son that she would finish things with Negan, as he believes her obsession with Negan has hindered their relationship. Clips from the video show her concern for Negan.
Regardless of what happens, the wait will soon be over as The Walking Dead: Dead City will return to AMC and AMC+ beginning May 4. The eight-part season will conclude on June 22.
