Melissa McBride, one of the most recognizable faces in The Walking Dead universe, is hinting at a significant career pause once The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon comes to an end. As the AMC spinoff moves toward its anticipated fourth and final season, the talented actress is already looking beyond the franchise that has defined much of her career.
Speaking to People at AMC’s Global Media Upfront in New York City on April 29, McBride opened up about what she plans to do after years of working within the long-running zombie saga. Rather than immediately jumping into another television or film project after Daryl Dixon season 4 wraps up, she suggested she intends to take a step back from the industry to focus on herself and her personal life.
“I’m gonna be working on me a little bit,” McBride said, describing her post-Daryl Dixon plans as a period of rest and reflection. While she did not frame it as a permanent departure from acting, her comments strongly indicate that she is preparing for a meaningful break after more than a decade in The Walking Dead universe.
"I’m gonna be doing a little personal time. And then we’ll just see what happens.” - Melissa McBride
For fans, this news marks a notable moment in the ongoing evolution of the franchise. Even after the original Walking Dead series concluded, its universe has continued through spinoffs like Daryl Dixon, which has carried forward familiar characters while introducing new settings and story directions.

For many actors in long-running series, especially those involving physically and emotionally intense material, taking time away is a common way to reset before deciding on future projects. McBride’s planned break seems to reflect that same pattern. She has played the role of Carol Peletier across The Walking Dead franchise for a very long time.
Of course, OG Walking Dead fans remember how Carol started off as a quiet, soft-spoken survivor early in the original series, and evolved into one of the most hardened and complex figures in the entire universe. That transformation—from grief-stricken outsider to strategic and often ruthless survivor—helped define some of the show’s most impactful storylines.
Then, Daryl Dixon came along, and fans were excited to see McBride reprise her iconic Carol role alongside Norman Reedus as Daryl. But unfortunately, she would not appear in the spinoff until the season 1 finale. However, she would go on to appear in every episode of seasons 2 and 3. For Daryl Dixon season 4, McBride is expected to appear in all eight episodes along with Reedus.
The fourth and final season is confirmed to premiere on AMC sometime in 2026, and a new rumor is currently circulating that it might start airing this fall. While plot details remain under wraps, it's expected that we'll see our favorite zombie apocalypse survivors continue trying to find their way back to America.
If Daryl and Carol do make it safely back to the States, will they be reunited with Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln)? That's the burning question everyone wants to know. Or, perhaps we might see Rick travel to Spain instead after he learns that the duo is stranded overseas. It could be a brief cameo appearance.
Lincoln did tease back in a September 2025 interview that a "conversation" was happening at the time about his potential return to The Walking Dead franchise. Production on Daryl Dixon season 4 was still ongoing in September, so maybe Lincoln secretly made a quick visit to the set without fans even realizing it. That would be exciting! But we won't know until the fourth season starts airing sometime this year.
Stay tuned to Undead Walking for any new updates on Daryl Dixon season 4 and its cast!
