The Walking Dead universe is adding new series as quickly as the old ones are concluding. The main series aired its final episode in November 2022, and the first spinoff, Fear the Walking Dead, will premiere its eighth and final season in May 2023. That leaves room for several new series that are in various stages of production. What’s coming next in The Walking Dead universe?

The Walking Dead: Dead City will be the first direct spinoff of the flagship series. Set in apocalyptic Manhattan, this series will see the unlikely paring of Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), characters from the main series, as they embark on a mission to rescue Maggie’s son Hershel (Logan Kim), who has been abducted. The idea of a Walking Dead series set in a cityscape like New York is an exciting new addition to the universe. Maggie and Negan will encounter new people during their journey, some good and some bad, while battling a horde of walkers, over one million strong, isolated on the island.

Dead City premieres on AMC and AMC+ on June 18, 2023, at 10 p.m. ET following the mid-season 8 finale of Fear the Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead spinoffs

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will be the next direct spinoff from The Walking Dead. This series will focus on Daryl Dixon, a character played by Norman Reedus since season 1 of the main series. The series is filmed and set in France, which seems far-fetched, even for TWDU.  Hopefully, there is an excellent explanation of how Daryl arrives in France. That information will be a huge determining factor as to whether or not this series will be any good. Daryl will arrive in France, not of his free will, and have no memory of how or why he is there. This could also be a fantastic series with a whole new setting vastly different from the main series.

Daryl Dixon will premiere in the fall of 2023.

The Walking Dead: Summit (which is believed to be the working title) is the continuation of the epic love story of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira). The couple had been separated in season 9 of The Walking Dead, and this series will fill in the gaps of what has transpired since then and see the long-awaited reunion of the couple.

Summit will release in 2024.

Two other spinoffs are also included in TWDU,  The Walking Dead: World Beyond, a two-season limited series that was a coming-of-age story that gave vital information about the CRM (Civic Republic Military). The other spinoff, Tales of the Walking Dead had one season so far, and it is told in an anthology format in which each episode is a standalone story. These episodes introduced new characters across multiple US locations and were set in different periods after the outbreak.

TWD Chief Content Officer Scott M. Gimple has stated that more series could be coming depending on the reception of the new spinoffs. This is exciting news for fans of The Walking Dead universe.
