What are the new Walking Dead spinoffs?
By Renee Hansen
Many entertainment outlets have previously reported that it is time for The Walking Dead universe to end. This is a sentiment some fans have agreed with. But there is good news for the die-hard fans who aren’t ready to let go quite yet. AMC is bringing fans some exciting spinoffs to continue the story. What are the new spinoffs?
Within the past year or so, AMC Networks has seen leadership changes that have altered TWDU’s direction. Instead of a trilogy of movies starring Rick Grimes, AMC has decided to keep control in-house and create a series to complete the story of Rick (Andrew Lincoln) and Michonne (Danai Gurira).
Many fans would rather see this story in a series than a trilogy of films. But, viewers need to remember that the Rick and Michonne who left us won’t be the ones who return to us. These characters have really been through it and will be entirely changed by their experiences.
The Walking Dead spin-offs
The first spinoff from The Walking Dead series was Fear the Walking Dead, of which AMC has announced the eighth season will be the last. The second was the limited-run two-season series The Walking Dead: World Beyond, which began as a coming-of-age apocalyptic tale that ended with a significant amount of vital information regarding the CRM (Civic Republic Military).
In August 2022, Tales of the Walking Dead began its six-episode first season. This was a series of standalone stories introducing new characters within the world of The Walking Dead. One episode featured an origin story of a familiar face. Samantha Morton reprised her role as Alpha during a time when she was known by Dee and was accompanied by a young Lydia. This series is an excellent addition to TWDU and may be continued in the newest announced short-form series, More Tales of the Walking Dead.
The Walking Dead: Dead City aired its first season, beginning in June 2023. This series marked the first direct spinoff featuring Walking Dead characters Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan). Set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan, this series greatly expanded the universe by introducing new communities and, with that, new villains. It also filled in the gaps in Maggie and Negan’s stories since they were last seen in the series finale of The Walking Dead. Dead City has been renewed for a second season.
The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon spinoff will premiere on AMC and AMC+ on September 10. Daryl will find himself in France, with no memory of how he arrived. He will immediately want to find his way home but encounters people who need his help. A sect of nuns, The Union of Hope, believes Daryl to be sent by God as a messenger to take a young boy on a dangerous mission to fulfill his destiny. Daryl Dixon has been renewed for a second season.
The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will continue the epic love story of Rick and Michonne. Set to release in 2024, this series will feature the long-awaited reunion of the couple. The Ones Who Live will focus on the CRM, the organization Rick was traded to.
