During my time watching The Walking Dead I've noticed that most characters are at their lowest when they are out trying to survive on their own. Then their best moments would arrive when they surrounded themselves with other like-minded survivors.
As humans we are built for community, and when we have our people by our side, we can accomplish great things. So, it is no shock to find out what made The Walking Dead even better were the characters' friendships. In this article I will be listing some of the best friendships witnessed throughout the show.
1. Daryl and Carol
This unlikely duo seemed to come out of nowhere. At the beginning of the show Daryl was a tough shell to crack, striving to become his own person outside of the influence of his brother, Merle. He wasn't always the nicest to Carol at the beginning, but he went out of his way to find Carol's daughter and did more for her than her own husband ever did. As the years went by, this friendship grew more and more, eventually becoming a staple relationship throughout The Walking Dead universe.
Daryl and Carol have a brother and sister kind of relationship that cannot be broken. They have remained best friends throughout their ups and downs. They are always there for one another and have one of the strongest bonds on the show. In The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, Carol crossed the world to find Daryl. If that's not proof of their unbreakable bond, then I don't know what is. Survivors and enemies alike know not to mess with Daryl and Carol, or else they are going to be in a world of hurt.
2. Carl and Michonne
Carl and Michonne became fast friends during a supply run in season 3, episode 12, titled "Clear." The two bonded while trying to retrieve a photo of Carl's dead mother, Lori, to give to Judith. Soon after, Michonne began retrieving comics for Carl when she went out looking for the Governor. They shared their interests with one another, and over time they began to confide in one another. Carl became the first person Michonne told she had a son. They went on to share candy bars and lasting memories together.
Their existing friendship made it even better when Michonne and Rick decided to get together during season 6, episode 10, titled "The Next World." Carl and Michonne's friendship gave fans a deeper look into their lives while livening up the mood of this gloomy apocalyptic world. Their friendship made room for some great moments and made the show even better. Fans loved witnessing the relationship these two had and how it shaped the show.
3. Beth and Daryl
Beth and Daryl grew to rely and confide in one another during the days after the fall of the prison. During season 4, episode 12, titled "Still," Beth confronts Daryl about his lack of emotions and feelings towards everything that happened to them. Daryl shoves her comments aside, and Beth decides to take Daryl out in search of some alcohol. Beth had never had any before, and since her father was no longer there to deny her the beverage, she wanted to try some. Later in the episode Beth and Daryl find a cabin with some moonshine and start playing a drinking game. Once Daryl becomes drunk, he and Beth get into a fight, and Daryl finally spills his feelings out to Beth.
Daryl and Beth confided in one another that night, and their friendship becomes even stronger. Daryl went on to teach Beth how to shoot a crossbow, and Beth taught Daryl that there are still good people worth saving in the world. Daryl became an even better character through his friendship with Beth, and viewers still talk about their relationship to this day.
4. Hershel and Rick
Hershel was always there for Rick when he needed someone to confide in. He was Rick's voice of reason in a difficult season, and Hershel was even there for Rick as well when saving Carl's life. Rick also saved Hershel countless times by protecting the group and helping Hershel stay alive when he was bit by a walker. The two of them formed a beautiful friendship trying to survive the apocalypse together. Hershel trusted Rick, and the two relied on one another for guidance.
Hershel knew Rick was the right man to put in charge of their group and that he would guarantee their safety. They went from strangers to family, putting their lives on the line for one another. They had a father-and-son kind of relationship that ended with Rick taking Hershel's final advice, putting a smile on the old man's face.
5. Rick and Daryl
The friendship between Rick and Daryl became one of the best relationships developed over time. Daryl started the show as a loner but soon integrated into the group and found out where he belonged. It wasn't until the prison days that Daryl became Rick's right-hand man. Daryl knew how to get things done and do the hard things when needed. Rick began to rely on Daryl to help him when times became tough. Daryl provided for Rick's family after the death of Lori and continued to stand by Rick during the struggling times and the wars between other groups.
Rick and Daryl might not be blood, but they became brothers, which made their friendship even more special. Daryl could also rely on Rick to make the tough choices, and they would ride out their consequences together. Even when disagreements arose and fighting ensued, they still had each other's backs. Their friendship made the show even better to watch and gave fans something to root for.
