6 vehicles played a bigger role in The Walking Dead than you remember

Vehicles played a huge role in The Walking Dead over its 11 seasons.

In a zombie apocalypse you need to have many resources to help you survive. From weapons like guns, bows, knives, and swords to necessities like food and shelter. We've seen all these resources help out survivors in The Walking Dead. Another resource that has helped survivors tremendously were the vehicles they used to move around to new locations, gather supplies, and escape walkers and worse.

There have been many vehicles that have helped people survive throughout The Walking Dead. Some of those vehicles played a much bigger role in the series than others. I picked six of those vehicles to highlight from The Walking Dead.

Daryl's motorcycle

Daryl Dixon has ridden many motorcycles on the show. It is one of his character's most used vehicles. He has used it to help the group in many ways: scouting the terrain ahead of other members vehicles, making supply runs, leading walker herds away, and even for a quick getaway. Daryl has shown that motorcycles make a great apocalyptic vehicle. Motorcycles have so many unique uses that Daryl has shown us throughout his time in the apocalypse. Daryl even used it on his trips outside of Alexandria when Aaron recruited him to help find people in need during season 5.

However, one thing a motorcycle isn't as good for is carrying supplies you may need. This is where a car might be better for storage purposes. A motorcycle also doesn't hold as much gas as most cars do, so it's probably not ideal to use a motorcycle if you are on your own with no place to call home in an apocalypse.

Dale's RV

Dale Horvath's Winnebago RV is a great vehicle for the apocalypse. In the early days of The Walking Dead the group had to be ready to leave at any moments notice and the RV was a great vehicle that they could carry their supplies in and travel long distances with. There was times when Dale's RV had broken down, but the group was able to fix it time and time again. Even after Dale's RV was lost to the farm the group was able to use a new one in later seasons.

RV's have a lot of gas mileage and space, and it offers more protection to the outside elements than other vehicles may. In season 6 of The Walking Dead, Tara and Heath even take an RV on a two week supply run. This shows how long lasting these vehicles can be in an apocalypse.

(L-R) T-Dog (Robert 'IronE' Singleton), Lori Grimes (Sarah Wayne Callies), Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs), Hershel Greene (Scott Wilson), Rick Grimes (Andrew Lincoln), Beth (Emily Kinney), Maggie Greene (Lauren Cohan), Carol (Melissa Suzanne McBride), Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) and Glenn (Steven Yeun) - The Walking Dead - Season 2, Episode 13 - Photo Credit: Gene Page/AMC

The 2011 Hyundai Tucson

The 2011 Hyundai Tucson was a staple vehicle in The Walking Dead during seasons 2, 3, and 4. The group used this car many times and for many purposes. They used it to go on runs, while searching for Sophia, to carry supplies, and so on. The Hyundai also has good gas mileage and could carry a good amount of supplies. It was also a light green color which could easily blend into its surroundings if the group needed it to. It was hidden well by the foliage when Hershel, Carl, Beth, and Judith hid in the forest while the first fight with the Governor ensued at the prison.

Overall, it's great to have an SUV in an apocalypse for transport, especially when it can have so many uses.

Tank

Now a tank may not be the best vehicle for transportation, but it can be super useful in a fight. The first tank we see in the show is one that has been abandoned in the streets of the city of Atlanta, Georgia. Rick Grimes finds shelter inside and is very much protected from the walkers that surround him outside, which is one positive about the vehicle. This is a very armored vehicle that takes a lot of firepower to put down, unless you're in close range and can put a grenade down the cannon without getting your hand blown off like Daryl does during the Governor's attack on the prison in season 4.

However, as we see in season 4 episode 8, titled "Too Far Gone," the tank does a significant amount of damage to the prison's guard towers, walls, and grounds. In the end, the Governor was able to take down the prison, which was basically because his group had used the tank. If a tank could take down a fortified prison, imagine what it could do to walkers.

The Governor's 1998 Dodge Ram Truck

The Governor's 1998 Dodge Ram Truck seemed like an indestructible car, almost like the Governor himself. The truck has less gas mileage than the 2011 Hyundai Tucson, but it is a tank of a vehicle. The Governor's addition of the lift kit, tires, bull bar, and lights made this vehicle great for the apocalypse. A bull bar is a great addition for the apocalypse because you can easily run over walkers and move cars out of your way with less damage to your vehicle.

The governor used this vehicle when tracking down Andrea in season 3 and it was a great off-road vehicle. Its additional lights also made it easier to see when driving at night. This vehicle also has a truck bed which can be great for transporting items of importance. This truck would be all the rage in an apocalypse.

Abraham's AM General M926

Abraham Ford found this military vehicle somewhere along the way to bring Eugene Porter to Washington, D.C. This vehicle doesn't have the best speed or gas mileage, but it is a strong vehicle with a big truck bed for storage. It is a good defense vehicle, as it was used by the military. There have been multiple occasions where we have seen The Walking Dead survivors use these kinds of military vehicles, especially during the Governor era.

Sadly, Abraham's vehicle didn't last as long as he expected, and they had to ditch it after Eugene had fired a bullet into its gas tank. But, these kinds of military vehicles are something you may want to have when in an apocalypse.
