After months of speculation and fan chatter, The Walking Dead: Dead City season 3 finally has its premiere date, and for most viewers following the series closely, itās probably exactly what they expected.
According to Entertainment Weekly, AMC has officially set the return of the Walking Dead spinoff for July 26, 2026. The new season will also stream on AMC+. While the date itself doesnāt come as a major shock, the confirmation finally puts an end to the guessing game surrounding when Negan and Maggieās story would continue, and more importantly, how quickly the series is moving into its next phase.
Back in late April 2026, news broke that Dead City season 3 would be opening this year's Monte-Carlo TV Festival as well as screening its first two episodes at the event. The festival runs from June 12-16. While this wasn't confirmation that the highly anticipated third season would be premiering on AMC around the same time, fans immediately began to wonder whether the network might be using the festival rollout as a soft launch for the seasonās broader release window. They immediately speculated that AMC might hand out a summer 2026 release.
Well, it looks like they were essentially on the right track. With AMC now locking in a late July premiere, the earlier festival screening begins to look less like a coincidence and more like a deliberate part of the rollout strategy.

When it comes to the premiere date, this will be a series first. The first season of Dead City premiered in June 2023, while the second season started airing in May 2025. With Dead City season 3 premiering in July, the series is now shifting into a noticeably later summer window than it has ever occupied before.
However, we can't really complain. We would rather take a mid-summer 2026 release over a 2027 premiere. If you've been faithfully keeping up with the zombie series, there were rumors swirling around that the new installment wouldn't be coming out until next year. Luckily, we don't have to worry about that anymore!
Dead City season 3 picks up right after the events of season 2, continuing the fractured but increasingly complex dynamic between Jeffrey Dean Morganās Negan and Lauren Cohanās Maggie. Once defined almost entirely by vengeance and mutual distrust, the pair are now stepping into unfamiliar territory. Instead of reluctant cooperation born out of necessity, season 3 will see the longtime enemies genuinely working together. And that shift is at the heart of everything coming this season.
A new chapter for Negan and Maggie
For years across The Walking Dead universe, the relationship between Negan and Maggie has been defined by one defining moment. That's Neganās brutal killing of Glenn. That act created a psychological and emotional divide that neither character has ever fully escaped, even as the franchise has repeatedly forced them into the same orbit.
But Dead City season 3 is doing something different. According to the creative team and cast, this season finally pushes the characters into a place where they are not just tolerating each other for survival. They are actively working together toward a shared goal. That alone marks one of the biggest emotional pivots in the entire franchise.
However, one of the more surprising reveals about the third season is that the series is reportedly stepping away from the traditional ābig bad villainā structure that has defined much of The Walking Dead franchise.
In past seasons, the story typically centered around a dominant antagonist or group. You know, someone or something that forced uneasy alliances and drove the narrative forward through conflict. But this time, new showrunner Seth Hoffman is taking a different approach.
Instead of a single overarching villain, Dead City season 3 will reportedly focus more on a shared mission and the fragile idea of rebuilding something meaningful in a world that has been destroyed for over a decade.
āWeāve seen the Governor, Negan himself, the Croat, and the Dama, but thereās not a specific big bad this season. It's really all about wanting to build this impossible thing, daring to have this leap of faith, and once we take this leap of faith, how do we make sure that this amazing vision that we have comes to fruition?ā - Seth Hoffman
New characters
Of course, Dead City will also introduce fresh faces in the third season.
According to Hoffman, one of the key additions for season 3 is a new group led by a woman named Renata (Aimee Garcia). Renata is described as a matriarchal figure who has built a large survivor community over the zombie apocalypse. Unlike many of the fractured groups seen throughout the franchise, Renataās group has managed to maintain unity over time and also has a history with the Croat. Maggie will find herself drawn to what Renata has managed to create.
Meanwhile, Maggieās son Hershel (Logan Kim) is drawn into his own subplot involving Renataās brother, Luis (RaĆŗl Castillo), a doctor who becomes an unexpected mentor figure. The third season will see Hershel deciding to explore medicine and follow in the footsteps of his grandfather, Hershel Greene.
On the other side of the narrative, Negan finds himself connected to a new character named Dillard (Jimmi Simpson). Hoffman basically describes Dillard as a man who has survived alone for years but has been psychologically altered by isolation. That said, we can already see this being an interesting dynamic!
Other than new characters, fans can definitely expect an "alternate-reality episode" this season. Remember those leaked behind-the-scenes season 3 photos of Negan and Maggie hanging around a surprisingly normal-looking New York City with clean streets? Or those other leaked photos of Emily Kinney dressed up as her old character, Beth? Those moments now make a lot more sense, as the new season will reportedly feature an alternate-reality-style episode. So, that's something else to be excited about!
Last but certainly not least, AMC also dropped the first teaser trailer for Dead City season 3. Check it out below!
Now that we have the official premiere date and teaser for Dead City season 3, all that is left is the official trailer. AMC will likely drop it closer to the show's return. Don't worry! We'll come back and share it once it drops, so stay tuned to Undead Walking!
