Fans of NBC’s reality competition slate will have to wait significantly longer than expected for the return of one of its breakout unscripted hits. The network has officially placed Destination X season 2 in its midseason 2027 lineup. This creates a lengthy gap between seasons, sparking frustration among viewers.

The series, hosted by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, quickly became one of NBC’s most talked-about reality debuts thanks to its unusual format, high-stakes gameplay, and mystery-driven structure. But while its first season built momentum and audience curiosity, the follow-up is now set to arrive after a notably long wait.

Walking Dead fans know Jeffrey Dean Morgan's work from his time as Negan on the zombie series and its spinoff, but his role on Destination X has taken him into very different territory as the host of a reality series built around confusion, geography, and psychological gameplay.

The first season was a success, but it took a pretty long time for NBC to make a decision on the show's fate. After finishing its run in July 2025, the network didn't renew the new reality series for a second season until March 2026. At the time of its renewal, it was revealed that the show was casting for the second installment.

But besides that, the only other thing revealed at the time was that Morgan would be returning as host. Now, we have a better idea of when Destination X season 2 will premiere on NBC even if we're not happy with the release window at all. Hopefully, we get to see the show's return in the early midseason 2027 window rather than later in the spring lineup. But we'll just have to wait and see!

Destination X quickly stood out when it premiered in 2025 because it flipped the usual competition show formula on its head. Instead of focusing on brute strength or standard elimination rounds, the entire game is built around one simple but disorienting idea. It's that nobody really knows where they are.

Contestants are moved through real locations, but they’re intentionally kept in the dark about their exact whereabouts. That twist turns every moment into a guessing game, where paying attention to small details can matter just as much as winning challenges.

Along the way, players experience bits and pieces of the world around them. But nothing is ever fully spelled out. Even straightforward details can turn into traps, since anything might be a helpful clue or a deliberate misdirection.

At the end of each episode, everything comes down to a map. Each contestant has to lock in a guess on where they think they are. Get it right, and they stay in the game. Get it wrong, and they’re gone. It sounds simple, but in practice it creates constant pressure, with players second-guessing not just the clues but their own instincts too. For the last person standing, they get a hefty $250,000 prize. So, it's a pretty big incentive!

Besides Destination X season 2, Morgan's upcoming projects include Dead City season 3 and Sterling Point. While Sterling Point is confirmed to premiere on Prime Video on Aug. 5, 2026, Dead City season 3 is only expected to start airing on AMC sometime this summer. We'll have to get back to you with the official release date for the zombie series once it's announced, so stay tuned to Undead Walking!
