Fear the Walking Dead: A guide to the first season
By Susie Graham
Episode 5
Get a quick idea of what episode 5 holds for us:
In episode 5 we meet a new character in Victor Strand. The lines between good and bad are blurred and we lose Griselda. We find out what the Army is up to and where all the zombies have been hiding.
The Don’t Open, Dead Inside sign would be painted on the arena if this were Atlanta and not Los Angeles. And they may not have all been dead at the time they were locked in there. Perhaps the same may have been true in that hospital cafeteria.
Nick was not taken to the hospital with Griselda. He was taken to a holding area. It’s not clear what the plan is for these ne’er-do-well prisoners. Nick, Strand, the slick dressed, self-described “closer”, and cry baby neighbor Douglass. My guess is that part of it is that they were just people who took too much attention and holding them freed up the soldiers to do other things.
Chris and Alicia are bored and play dress up in a rich neighbor’s house and then let out some of their frustrations by breaking and destroying vases and chandeliers and other property that will do no good in this new world.
Travis learns about the infected. He is forced to face one and admit they are not people. But he still can’t shoot zombie girl Kimberly with a name tag on her yellow donut shop Polo shirt.
Liza gets a zombie lesson as well from the doctor, who is well aware that the brain is the only way to stop it and that time before turning varies. Griselda dies after going into septic shock from the amputation and ranting to God about her punishment for things she may have done. Liza puts the shot in Griselda’s head to stop the process.
Daniel used slow torture to get Ofelia’s soldier friend to finally give up the goods about Cobalt. The Evacuation mission for the soldiers at 9 am the following morning that also includes the “humane termination” of the remaining civilians. We are reminded of Shane and Lori watching the napalm in Atlanta.
