Gale Anne Hurd talks about The Walking Dead final season and movies
By Renee Hansen
Fans of The Walking Dead universe know Gale Anne Hurd is an executive producer for all three of the series in the franchise. What many fans may not know or may have gotten is that she has been involved in major box-office films like The Terminator (1984), Aliens (1986), The Abyss (1989) and Armageddon (1998). She is an impressive woman who worked hard to achieve much-deserved successes in her career.
Hurd started her career in 1979, working her way up the career ladder where she became involved in production. In 1982 she started her own production company, Western Productions, now known as Valhalla Entertainment.
She has won many awards during her career, including the Telluride Tech Festival Award of Technology in 2003, Laura Ziskin Lifetime Achievement Award from the Athena Film Festival in 2013, the Fangoria Lifetime Achievement Award in 2017, and this year she is being awarded the Premio Raimondo Rezzonico (Best Producer Award) at the Locarno Film Festival.
Gale Anne Hurd the final season of The Walking Dead
In an interview with Variety, Hurd shared some thoughts on the final season of the flagship series in The Walking Dead franchise. One thing she shared was that fans of the series love the characters in the series. For those fans, season 11 will make them happy. There will be surprising alliances and surprising fiction.
This is evident in the teasers and trailer we have seen for the upcoming season. The fact that Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dead Morgan) share screen time is quite a surprise given their history.
Hurd also commented on fan-favorite Daryl Dixon, who isn’t a character in the comics but has been brought to life by the years of work Norman Reedus has put into the character. She also said that Reedus has stated this season has some spectacular things coming up.
Viewers know that Alexandria is in dire straights, the Reapers are coming and the Commonwealth story arc is here. This means there are many stories to be told in the 24 episodes that will complete The Walking Dead series.
Hurd was asked about Andrew Lincoln’s return in the films and why the progress for those films has been so slow.
"When the series itself has such a large scope, you have to make sure that the scope of the film matches the demands of a theatrical audience, but also continues with the nuanced characters that people come to expect from the TV series. That’s why."
Another interesting bit of information she shared was regarding the Tales of The Walking Dead anthology series that is planned after the series ends. Fans will make comments about why they killed a certain character. Actors who have left have said, “I have other stories I need to tell,” or, “I have a young family, I live in England, and I need to be there in the morning and wake up to my children.” These are some of the reasons actors have departed from the series.
"But luckily almost everyone who’s ever been on the show wants to come back and have their story be told on Tales of the Walking Dead."
This IS great news as fans have expressed the many characters they hope to see in this series. The series will tell stories of any of the characters in TWDU. The prospect of seeing the return of beloved characters who have died in the series is exciting.
The Walking Dead returns to AMC on August 22 with the premiere episode for the eleventh and final season. AMC+ subscribers can stream this episode one week early on August 15.
