The Walking Dead: Dead City is the fourth spinoff of The Walking Dead, which focuses on longtime enemies, Maggie (Lauren Cohan) and Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), in a story set in post-apocalyptic Manhattan. The series has been renewed for a second season. Will Maggie return?

Dead City's first season saw Maggie team up with Negan in an effort to rescue her son Hershel (Logan Kim), who was kidnapped by The Croat (Željko Ivanek), a former member of Negan's Saviors. She would betray Negan and trade him to secure her son's release.

Both Maggie and Hershel will return in the second season of Dead City. At the end of the first season, Maggie, whose relationship with her son has been negatively affected by her obsession with seeking revenge on Negan for the brutal killing of her husband Glenn (Steven Yeun), has vowed to finish things with Negan.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cohan stated that while she knows the meaning of what Maggie says, she is reluctant to share.

"Because I know what it means, and I don’t want people to be directed because I have heard so many different perceptions of that moment. And I love seeing how differently people take it. So I certainly know what it is, and it makes me more excited to do a second season. It makes me really interested to put all that down on paper and on film, because the best part of this character yet is this place that she can go now. And it was not what I ever imagined."

Maggie has had more than her share of heartbreak since the outbreak. She lost her father, Hershel (Scott Wilson), and sister, Beth (Emily Kinney), and during her pregnancy, watched the brutal bludgeoning of her husband, Glenn. After giving birth to her son, she left Hilltop to help Georgie (Jayne Atkinson), but during that time, experienced more loss and traumatic events. Upon her return to the communities, she discovered that Hilltop had been destroyed by the Whisperers, aided by Negan.

By the end of The Walking Dead series, she appeared to begin to heal from so much loss, only to take a setback in Dead City. In the new series, she has grown cold and hard, and while she seemed to come to terms with a new version of Negan in TWD, Dead City saw a renewal of her old feelings.

The second season of Dead City began filming in Massachusetts in April 2024, and fans are excited to see what's to come in this series. The final episode set things up for several characters' stories to continue.

Another exciting piece of news for the second season is that Sons of Anarchy actor Kim Coates has been announced to portray Bruegel, an intelligent and manipulative man who leads one of the fiercest gangs in New York.

The Walking Dead: Dead City will return to AMC and AMC+ with season 2, most likely in 2025.
