When I watch a show my favorite part is when I experience something unexpected and heartbreaking. I know that might sound strange, but it's those surprises that I believe make a great show. They keep fans invested and looking forward to what comes next, especially when those plot lines connect to the storyline on a deeper level. The Walking Dead displays those surprises that keep fans engaged and entertained. We can see this through their use of heartbreaking betrayals throughout the show.
We have seen these betrayals since the beginning of the show. The writers of the show knew what they had to do to keep fans coming back for more as they poured out pages of script. The most talked about betrayal being the moment Shane Walsh lined his sight on his best friend Rick Grimes in the woods outside the city of Atlanta.
From that moment on, everyone kept a close eye on Shane and never knew what to expect from him. However, we will not be delving into that betrayal today. Today we will be looking at some heartbreaking betrayals that are spoken of less often.

1. Andrea choosing the Governor over Michonne and Rick
At the end of season 2, Andrea Harrison is separated from Rick's group and meets Michonne, who she ends up spending the winter with. In season 3, the two of them end up in the community of Woodbury run by a man named Phillip, also known as the Governor. During their stay, Michonne is wary of the Governor and doesn't trust the community. Michonne wants to leave, however, Andrea wants to stay. She is drawn in by the thought of safety and the looks of a thriving community. Andrea chooses to believe the Governor over Michonne's suspicions and decides to stay, letting Michonne leave on her own.
As time goes on, Andrea betrays Michonne along with Rick time and time again throughout the remainder of her stay on the show. She visits Rick's group and goes back to the Governor, failing to kill him even after hearing what he had done to her old group. Then after the meeting between Rick and the Governor, put together by Andrea, she chooses to go back with the Governor one last time even after knowing that nothing is going to stop the war brewing between him and Rick. Sadly, Andrea realizes little too late that it was finally time to put the Governor's grueling rule to an end and because of her choices she ended up dead.

2. The Governor turning against his own people
In the season finale of season 3, we witness the Governor and the people of Woodbury try to attack Rick's group at the prison. This fight does not go as planned for the Governor, as his people flee out of fear as Rick's group had the advantage.
The Governor tries to stop the people from fleeing and argues with them, wanting them to go back to fight Rick's group. His soldiers are not in agreement and don't believe it's worth it to fight them, fearing they will end up dead.
At the sound of disagreement and out of anger, the Governor opens fire on all his soldiers, killing all but three who are present. The Governor leaves Martinez and Shumpert, along with Karen, unknown to him. This was a shock to fans and survivors in the show, however, it confirmed what fans knew all along, that the Governor was a true villain.

3. Nicholas leaving Noah and Glenn
In season 5, episode 14, titled "Spend," members of Rick's group join Alexandrians, Aiden and Nicholas, on a supply run. While on the run, things turn sideways when Aiden shoots a grenade on a walker and it goes off. The group gets separated after the grenade goes off and Nicholas, Glenn, and Noah try to rescue an impaled Aiden as a herd of walkers draws near.
Nicholas runs away as they struggle to get Aiden free, with Glenn and Noah following soon after. While running out of the building, they are cut off by another heard of walkers blocking the entrance to the building. The three of them get stuck in the revolving doors of the building, with Glenn and Noah opposite of Nicholas.
Thankfully, Eugene is able to lead the walkers away from the front of the building, however, the three still remain stuck inside the revolving doors. Any sudden movement of the doors could result in one of their deaths from the walkers inside the building. As Glenn tries to break the glass on the revolving door, Nicholas, in impatient terror, decides to leave the revolving door, causing the death of Noah. Fans were heartbroken to see Noah torn apart in front of Glenn after Nicholas' betrayal.

4. Abraham leaving Rosita to be with Sasha
In season 6, Abraham Ford started spending more time with Sasha Williams. Then suddenly during episode 12 of the season, titled "Not Tomorrow Yet," Abraham breaks up with Rosita Espinosa. Abraham and Rosita had been together since before their appearance in the show in season 4, episode 10. I'm not sure about you, but this betrayal felt like it came out of nowhere. It was heartbreaking to witness Abraham breaking up with Rosita out of the blue.
When Rosita asked his reasoning, she was met with the line, "When I first met you, I thought you were the last woman on earth. You're not." This tugged at fans heartstrings and made fans feel terrible for Rosita. Abraham's sudden interest in Sasha seemed very random, and fans were shocked to see the end of this iconic relationship.

5. Eugene joining Negan
In season 7, episode 8, titled "Hearts Still Beating," Eugene Porter gets captured by Negan after Rosita's attempt to murder Negan with a bullet made by Eugene. After his capture, it took Eugene no time at all to be all in, pledging his loyalty to Negan.
At first, fans thought Eugene might have had something up his sleeve and was plotting to take Negan down. However, as the show went on we watched Eugene side with Negan time and time again. Fans have witnessed Eugene do what he needed to survive in the past, but it seemed like he was becoming a valued member of Rick's group. He was even a genuine friend to most of the members of Alexandria, so this betrayal was sad to witness.
At the end of season 8, Rosita and Daryl take Eugene back, however, this was no rescue mission. Viewers could see how furious Rosita was over Eugene's betrayal. She claimed they were going to lock Eugene away and use him for his intelligence. Eugene escapes from the two shortly after his capture and returns to Negan, continuing to make bullets for him. Fans would soon witness Eugene's bullets to backfire on the Saviors in the season 8 finale, confirming his loyalty to Rick's group. Eugene admits that Rosita's harsh words finally made him realize what he needed to do.

6. Richard betraying the Kingdom
In season 7, episode 13, titled "Bury Me Here," Kingdom members meet up with the Saviors to give them their routine supplies. On their way there, they are stopped short by a line of shopping carts pointing towards a grave marked with the words "Bury me here." After this, they make their way to the meeting point late and get into a scuffle with the Saviors because of it. Soon after checking the supplies, the Saviors find that they are short one melon, and they take the group's guns. Gavin signals for Jared to kill Richard since they indicated he'd be the first to go if they caused any trouble. However, Jared quickly changes his aim and shoots Benjamin in the leg, penetrating an artery.
Sadly, Benjamin doesn't make it and Morgan Jones soon finds out that Richard was responsible for his death. Richard staged the shopping carts and took a melon out of the truck while they were stopped on the road. He thought he would be killed instead of Benjamin, creating a grave for them to bury him in.
Richard wanted to convince the Kingdom to fight the Saviors by giving the Saviors a reason to kill him. This was a heartbreaking death for the Kingdom and in Morgan's fury he killed Richard for causing Benjamin's death. This was a difficult episode to watch, and this betrayal sadly reopened a part of Morgan that he'd been trying to bury.

7. Rick betraying Maggie by saving Negan
In the season 8 finale, titled "Wrath," the final battle against Negan comes to a close. At the end of the episode Rick Grimes slits Negan's throat, but is convicted by Negan's words and the guilt of going against Carl's hope for a better future. This leads Rick to ask for Negan to be saved. Instead of letting him die, Rick wanted Negan to live locked up, so that he could build the world back into what it used to be. In The Walking Dead Rick's group went through this endless cycle of encountering evil people and ending their lives. They were in a constant war with others, however, this was a turning point for the group and gave them hope that they could rebuild what they had lost.
Maggie Rhee didn't see the big picture like Rick did. Maggie felt betrayed by Rick after everything Negan had done to them. Rick kept saying he would kill Negan and Maggie trusted him to get the job done. Keeping Negan alive caused Maggie pain and reminded her of the death of her husband, Glenn Rhee. This is a decision I really enjoyed from Rick because it carried on Carl's legacy and made the group better for it.

8. Jocelyn kidnaps the children of Alexandria
In season 9, episode 14, titled "Scars," the episode shows a flashback to when Michonne was pregnant with RJ. During the episode the Alexandrians find a woman named Jocelyn with some children. Jocelyn ends up being an old friend of Michonne's from college, so they decide to take her and all the children with her to Alexandria. However, in the middle of the night, Jocelyn and the children with her kidnap Judith, along with all the children in Alexandria. They also kill a member of Alexandria and steal supplies.
Michonne and Daryl go searching for the children, but end up being injured and branded by Jocelyn and her kids. However, they end up escaping and Michonne gets beat up by her former friend Jocelyn and is forced to kill her. This gave fans another glimpse of what the apocalypse turned people into. We first saw this kind of betrayal with Shane as it happened before our eyes, but fans did not expect Jocelyn to be such a stone-cold killer.
