In The Walking Dead universe survivors need many things in order to survive. Food, water, weapons, shelter, community, clothes, etc. Among these needs, most survivors struggle with finding food the most.
Throughout the series groups are always out scavenging for food and supplies. Water can also be difficult to find, but in many cases, food is harder to come by, and certain perishables can run out even faster. A self-sufficient food source like that of a farm has helped survivors grow crops and raise livestock without being at risk of starvation.
However, without this incoming source of food, we've seen many survivors throughout The Walking Dead universe eating the most insane sources of nourishment. For this list, I will focus on the main show of The Walking Dead and what they have eaten to survive a depleting world.
6. Horses
Most survivors have used horses as a means of transportation throughout the show. They provide a quieter way to travel while using fewer resources. During most of the show, horses are a cherished companion that makes survivors' lives a bit easier. However, in season 11 episode 3, titled "Hunted," this soon changes as the group at Alexandria struggles to produce and find food.
After the Whisperer War, survivors work hard to rebuild Alexandria. Carol, Rosita, Kelly, and Magna decide to go out in search of the horses that had escaped from the community during the war. They find many of the horses dead but are able to successfully catch four of them and bring them back home.
After the horses are tied up, Carol takes the fourth horse to a barn and kills it. The scene then transitions into another scene where the children in Alexandria are hesitant to eat the cooked horse meat. Hershel reassures the other children, saying he's eaten it before while out on the road and that it's not that bad as long as they take small bites and eat it quickly. With this statement the other children start to slowly bite into the meat. In the next scene Rosita shows her baby the "ponies." However, she quickly spots Carol in the distance washing the horse's blood off her hands. I really enjoy the contrast between these scenes and how they show the groups' tug-of-war between morals and survival.
5. Mud Snakes
In season 4 episode 12, titled "Still," Beth and Daryl are separated from the rest of the group after the fall of the prison. They've spent their days running from walkers and adapting to a new diet, snakes.
In the episode Daryl is seen stabbing a snake and pulling its skin off. After cooking the snake to charcoaled perfection, Beth and Daryl enjoy a tasty meal of "snake jerky." Later, Beth grows weary of sitting around and wants to go out in search of booze since her father is no longer around to deny her a drink. In her frustration with Daryl's reluctance and lack of emotion, she refers to their shared meal as "mud snakes," showing just how bad their meal must have been.
4. Turtles
When desperate and alone, survivors can find themselves doing the worst kinds of things to survive. During a flashback sequence in season 6 episode 2, titled "JSS," Enid finds herself alone after witnessing both of her parents die in front of her. In the flashback we see Enid begin as a scared girl and transform into a hardened individual. She becomes used to the dirty and rough lifestyle that comes with living out on the road.
In one scene, she finds a turtle and eats it raw with her gritty hands. This scene shows Enid at her lowest, right before she found the community of Alexandria that would bring her back to life.
It is interesting how an unseemly creature can become a lifesaving meal for someone in the apocalypse. This scene displays how dire life in the apocalypse can become when you are out on your own and how the food we eat every day can become delicacies in a world like The Walking Dead. This meal also reminded many fans of the animals and rodents Daryl has eaten raw.
3. Opossums
Daryl has had his fair share of wild meals. He has eaten squirrels, snakes, rabbits, and owls. However, one of the most grotesque things Daryl has eaten is raw opossum. The first time we see him take a liking to the rodent is during season 3 episode 5, titled "Say the Word," when he and Maggie go out on a supply run.
While they are out scavenging for formula for baby Judith, Daryl and Maggie find an opossum in a pantry. Daryl exclaims, "Hello dinner!"
In excitement upon seeing the opossum. Daryl is also seen with an opossum in another popular set of scenes during season 5 episode 12, titled "Remember." In this episode the group shows up to Alexandria for the first time, and Daryl shows up with an opossum for dinner. He is then seen in another scene gutting the same opossum on a front porch.
Daryl was made for living out on the road and will always enjoy opossum, no matter the circumstance.
2. Dogs
In season 5 episode 10, titled "Them," the group was at its lowest it had ever been. Beth and Tyreese had just died episodes before, leaving the group feeling defeated. They were traveling out on the road, running low on both food and water.
At the beginning of the episode Maggie says, "How much longer we got?," referring to how much time they had left to live without finding any water. With their self-esteem dangerously low, they carry on, and along their journey, they are cut off by a pack of wild dogs. They quickly kill the dogs, and desperate for food, they cook and eat them while staring at their bloody collars in the distance. If they weren't already broken and tired, this would have affected them even more. However, the group was just trying to hold on to life the best they could so the meal of dogs didn't phase them. That's how you could tell that they had been out on the road for far too long.
1. Humans
The group at Terminus were some of the most horrendous individuals. In order to keep their community safe from being taken over, they began luring survivors in and eating them.
During the main group's time with them, we learn about the number of people they've killed and what kinds of people they've enjoyed eating the most. In season 5 episode 3, titled "Four Walls and a Roof," Gareth spoke to Bob while the rest of the group from Terminus ate his leg. Gareth gave a despicable speech about how they lived off of eating others.
When Carol arrived at Terminus to save the group, she witnessed the room where they kept all of their victims' belongings. There were several weapons along with children's stuffed animals and belongings. This group didn't only eat humans for survival but also enjoyed it.
This was ultimately the worst thing that anyone ate on The Walking Dead.
